The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating a hit and run that took the life of 59-year-old Richard Miley, of Spalding County.
Miley, who lived at 80 Windsor Road, was killed while riding his bicycle.
“Just before midnight, a call came in reporting a person in the ditch on Vineyard Road,” said Spalding County Coroner Michael Pryor. The Spalding County S.O. was first on the scene and they found him in the ditch, lying next to his bicycle. The person who struck him was not on the scene.”
Spalding Regional Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene, as did Pryor, who pronounced Miley deceased at the scene at 12:25 a.m.
Pryor said that Miley sustained blunt force trauma to the upper torso, and that his body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy.
Along with the SCSO, troopers from the GSP-Griffin Post responded to the scene.
Law enforcement authorities say initial information indicates the vehicle that struck Miley may have been a silver Toyota that will have damage to the front passenger side, a broken headlight and damage to the bumper.
Physical evidence was recovered at the scene.
“He had lights on his bicycle, and he was wearing a high-visibility vest on top of his coat. He was doing everything he could possibly do to keep from getting hit, but then someone hits him, anyway,” Pryor said. “There’s no way possible this person could say they didn’t know they hit an individual. You hear people sometimes say they thought they hit a dog, but in this case, there’s no way they didn’t know they’d hit a person,” Pryor said.
