Officials have identified the man whose body was located in a vehicle in the Home Depot parking lot as James Elliot Smith.

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

The person found deceased in a vehicle in the Home Depot parking lot Saturday morning has been identified as 55-year-old James Elliot Smith, of Milner.

According to the Griffin Police Department, Smith’s cause of death is unknown.

Smith’s body has been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy.

Griffin Police Department Public Information Officer Laurie Littlejohn did say there were no visible signs of foul play.

“There were confirmed no visible signs. The autopsy will be important in making that determination, “ she said.

She also confirmed reports that Smith’s vehicle had been in the parking lot for an extended period of time.

“Yes, from what I was told, it had been a few days. I’m not sure exactly how many, “ Littlejohn said. “I’m sure the autopsy will give us a better timeline.“

The GRIP will continue to follow this developing story and report additional information as it becomes available.
