Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix said the excavation process is inherently dangerous and necessitates slow movement.
“We got down as low as we could yesterday until it got just unsafe, so they had to stop. They’re sifting and sorting through what they got and that’s about where we are right now,” Dix said Friday evening.
SCSO personnel will be at the scene – 1095 Buck Creek Road and the next-door property – over the weekend.
“We’ll have people out there over the weekend and we’ll be out there until at least Monday,” he confirmed.
Dix said he cannot yet cite whether any evidence related to the missing person case has been recovered.
“I can’t say one way or the other. I can’t comment,” he said.
Relatives of the missing person have been nearby as the search has ensued.
“There was not a (family) notification that something had been found or anything like that. I can tell you that,” Dix said.
Once the excavation has concluded and all materials removed from the wells has been examined, additional information will be forthcoming.
“I’m sure that once we get through with everything out there, I’ll be able to say what was or wasn’t found. You have to remember that at the same time this is going on at the site, there’s a parallel investigation going on about the who, what, where, when, why and how,” Dix said. “There are more working parts of the investigation that’s being done. It’s not one dimensional. We’re not out there and not doing anything else.”
As of Friday night, the excavation has progressed approximately 70 feet down the well.
