A Griffin man has been arrested and charged with 16 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals after a Griffin Animal Control officer responded to a call reporting a possible dog fight.
Authorities say the AC officer who responded to the residence in the 100 block of Summit Drive was met with “an overwhelming odor of feces and urine” after he exited his vehicle.
When the officer made contact at the door with the suspect, 63-year-old Christopher Cromarte, the odor became overpowering.
Investigators allege that Cromarte was uncooperative and told officers that only six dogs were inside the residence.
Officials say that based on Cromarte’s refusal to cooperate, observations of coverings on the windows to prevent a view into the residence and a call history in reference to injured dogs, a search warrant was obtained.
Once inside the residence, 16 dogs were found in what authorities describe as deplorable conditions – covered in urine and feces – and in some instances, as many as four dogs occupied crates designed for only one dog, investigators say.
All 16 dogs were removed from the residence and placed in local shelters.
Hazmat gear was required for entry to the residence.
The residence has been inspected by a city of Griffin building official and it will be placed in the city’s nuisance abatement program for possible demolition.
