Connie Banks Pound, the owner of a Griffin home-based childcare facility, is facing 35 criminal charges – 19 felonies and 16 misdemeanors – related to a child abuse investigation.
Griffin Police Department investigators say Pound, whose childcare business is operated at her 835 Hanover Drive residence, physically abused multiple children in her care.
Griffin Police Department Chief Mike Yates did not respond to a Wednesday email requesting the incident reports associated with this case.
A separate email to Yates sought information such as the number of charges Pound is facing, what the charges are and the number of alleged victims in the case. Yates confirmed that Pound is facing arrest but declined to give specific details.
“Yes, warrants have been issued. The case is still active and evolving so I cannot accurately answer the other questions at this time,” Yates said.
That information was provided by the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the arrest warrants, which were issued by Griffin Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Ben Coker, Pound is accused of abusing three children.
Against alleged victim one, Pound is facing eight counts of misdemeanor battery; against alleged victim two, she is charged with seven counts of misdemeanor battery, 15 counts of felony cruelty to children and one count of aggravated battery, also a felony; and against alleged victim three, she is charged with one count of misdemeanor battery, two counts of felony cruelty to children and one count of aggravated battery.
Pound was originally slated to surrender to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday. Pound attorney, Larkin Lee, contacted the SCSO Wednesday afternoon and scheduled her later surrender.
“I found out at about 3:30 this afternoon that we had been contacted by Mrs. Pound’s attorney. He informed us that she is going to turn herself in at the Spalding County Jail tomorrow morning,” said Sheriff Darrell Dix.
Dix confirmed it is not unusual for a criminal defendant to negotiate the terms of their surrender.
These charges are based on a months-long GPD investigation.
Pound’s childcare facility remains open and operational.
