STAFF REPORT :::

The Griffin Police Department (GPD) and Griffin Fire-Rescue (GFR) are conducting a joint investigation after a man’s body was discovered in the remains of a burned vehicle.

The GPD Uniform Patrol Division and GFR personnel on Jan. 12 responded at approximately 3:30 a.m. to a report of the vehicle fire at 735 E. Chappell St.

When the fire was extinguished, the body of a man later identified as 29-year-old Christopher Wiggs was discovered.

GPD Criminal Investigation Division personnel, the Griffin fire marshal and Spalding County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and a joint investigation ensued.

Wigg’s body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy.

Investigators are awaiting results as they continue interviewing witnesses and following up on information in this case.

Authorities say additional information will be forthcoming.
