The Griffin-Spalding County School System will revert to at-home distance learning following the Christmas break.
According to Interim Superintendent Donald Warren, this change is due to an increase in Spalding County COVID-19 cases.
“Out of an abundance of caution, due to the current increase in COVID-19 cases in Spalding County, GSCS students will return to virtual at-home learning when they resume classes on January 6, following the Christmas break,” Warren said. “The safety and well-being of our students and personnel is always our top priority.”
Board of Education Chairman Will Doss reiterated officials’ concern regarding the risk COVID-19 presents.
“The board is very much aware of the spiking number of COVID-19 cases and are concerned for our staff and families of Griffin-Spalding. We are fully supportive of the decision to delay the start of in-person learning as a precaution and for the safety of all parties involved,” Doss said.
Students will not report to school buildings, but they will complete learning tasks from home, via Chromebooks, until further notice. This decision will be reevaluated in the coming weeks, with a possible return to in-person learning on Jan. 19.
Griffin Region College and Career Academy (GRCCA) students should check the website daily at http://www.grcca.education for further communication concerning COVID-19 updates.
Additional information will be sent via school email and Remind101. This applies to all students dual-enrolled at Gordon State College and Southern Crescent Technical College, as well as students enrolled in high school courses at GRCCA.
Meal packs will be offered beginning Jan. 12. Additional detailed information regarding locations and pick-up schedules will be announced later.
High school athletics will continue under Georgia High School Association guidelines.
All middle school athletic activities are cancelled until in-person school resumes.
Until further notice, teachers and staff members will be permitted to complete their professional duties and responsibilities from home.
School buildings and the central office will remain open to employees who need internet access and other resources and materials to complete their job functions.
Principals and district leaders will ensure that building access is available to employees during routine work hours. Specific building access schedules and requirements will be communicated directly by principals and supervisors.
Griffin-Spalding County School System officials say the safety and well-being of students, staff and families is a top priority and all are asked to continue to follow COVID-19 safety measures.
