A fatal officer involved shooting in Fayette County is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation was requested by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office after a Sunday afternoon incident at 1720 Highway 92, Fayetteville.
Authorities say 32-year-old Alonzo Leroy Landy called 911 at approximately 3:08 p.m. Sunday, reporting that he was telling people to get out of his head and was shooting rabbits.
During this phone call, 911 dispatchers said they heard numerous gunshots before Landy allegedly stated he was barricaded in his residence.
At 3:12 p.m., Fayette County Sheriff’s Office personnel were dispatched to Landy’s residence to conduct a welfare check. Landy remained on the line with dispatch, and dispatchers reported continued gunshots being fired.
Landy allegedly told dispatch that he would defend himself and shoot law enforcement officers if he had to.
Upon arrival, deputies did not approach Landy’s residence due to continued gunfire, officials say.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., dispatch received a phone call reporting Landy had sent a mass text message to family members stating he “couldn’t handle it anymore.”
At that time, Emergency Medical Services personnel was staged in the area, the Fayette County SWAT Team was dispatched and a perimeter was established around the property.
Negotiators were dispatched at approximately 3:35 p.m.
Officials say Landy told dispatch, “Come on blue boys,” as he continued to fire a gun.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined Landy was “heavily intoxicated,” and that negotiating was ineffective.
They said that at approximately 4:20 p.m., Landy appeared to be falling asleep during the phone conversation. The SWAT Team chose to deploy a robot inside the house to determine Landy’s whereabouts. However, before the robot could be deployed, officials say Landy exited his residence and began firing an “assault rifle” at deputies.
A deputy returned fire, striking Landy multiple times.
Landy was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Once the GBI investigation has been completed, its findings will be turned over to the Fayette County District Attorney’s Office for review.
This is the 87th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2020.
