Griffin City Manager Jessica O’Connor has confirmed that Griffin Police Department Officer Brian Dorety, who has been the subject of recent investigative articles in The GRIP, has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
“As is standard practice when someone or something is under investigation, Officer Dorety has been placed on administrative leave,” O’Connor said in response to an inquiry from The GRIP.
O’Connor said Dorety’s administrative leave is effective as of today.
Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie Broder on Friday, April 15, confirmed she had requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an inquiry to determine if any laws were violated before, during or after a December 2021 narcotics case conducted by the GPD Criminal Apprehension and Gang Enforcement (C.A.G.E.) Unit.
Dorety was the lead agent in that case.
In January, Dorety received a written reprimand and a lateral transfer from the C.A.G.E. Unit to the Uniform Patrol Division when it was discovered he failed to disclose that his December 2021 narcotics case was based on information provided to him by his girlfriend, Toni Berryman.
Berryman was in a prior relationship and shared a child with Thomas Taylor, one of the targets in Dorety’s narcotics investigation.
Approximately two weeks after Dorety, Holley and four other C.A.G.E. Unit agents executed a search warrant in that narcotics case, Taylor committed suicide.
Nearly 100 charges related to Dorety’s case were ultimately dismissed.
