STAFF REPORT :::
A drive-by shooting on West Chappell Street early Tuesday morning left a home riddled with bullets and caused residents to fear for their lives.
The incident occurred just after midnight in the vicinity of W. Chappell and West Quilly streets.
Multiple shots struck the home located at 325 W. Chappell St.
“Upon arrival I immediately began searching the nearby area for any signs of evidence,” said Griffin Police Department Officer Kody Billings. “I discovered approximately 30-40 bullet casings scattered across N 10th St (approximately 40 ft south of W Quilly St). Ofc. S. Astyk then informed me of the residence obtaining multiple bullet holes from the incident.”
Video footage from a nearby security camera showed a yellow four-door Dodge Charge Hemi drive past the residence mere seconds before the drive-by shooting.
Laquanda Kendrick, a resident of 325 W. Chappell St., said she was in bed – as were three additional residents – and awoke when the shooting began.
“Kendrick stated immediately she noticed there was bullets coming from within the walls she immediately ran to check on her patients whom also live with her (sic all),” Billings reported. “Kendrick advised she was a social worker and was the care giver (sic) for (victim three) and (victim four).”
Eddie Harris, the fourth resident, said he was awakened by what sounded like fireworks but that he was unaware they were under fire until Kendrick yelled, “Get on the ground! Someone is shooting at us!”
Authorities say Kendrick confirmed the safety of everyone in the home and immediately called 911.
Kendrick said while awaiting the GPD officers’ arrival, she discovered (victim four’s) bedroom had sustained the most damage from the shooting.
She also reported that a bullet had penetrated (victim four’s) bedroom wall, missing her head by only inches.
