STAFF REPORT :::

A 19-year-old Griffin man, Brandon Hawkins, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault following a Sunday afternoon shooting.

Deputies of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Patrol Division, the Spalding County Fire Department, Griffin Fire-Rescue and WellStar Spalding Regional EMS responded at approximately 1:18 p.m. to 615 Northside Drive Apartment 28A to a call reporting a person shot.

Upon arrival, 25-year-old Charlotin Presley was located inside the apartment with a single gunshot wound to his side.

Presley was transported from the scene but later died from his injuries.

“Spalding County Criminal Investigators, Crime Scene Investigators, and S.T.I.N.G. Unit Agents responded and began their investigation. Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie Broder’s office and Spalding County Coroner Michael Pryor’s Office were also notified of the situation,” said Sheriff Darrell Dix. “Based on witness statements and evidence recovered at the scene, investigators were able to determine that there was a verbal altercation between Hawkins, Presley, and other people who were standing in the parking lot. Hawkins entered his vehicle, drove a short distance away, exited his vehicle, and pointed a firearm at the group. At that point shots were exchanged and Presley was struck. Hawkins got back in his vehicle, drove off, and was later arrested near the scene.”

Authorities say crime scene investigators recovered more than 40 shell casings and three firearms from the scene related to this incident.

“We were able to recover video footage from the area of the shooting as it occurred and there were children playing nearby. Some of them ran, some took cover, and some just continued to play like nothing was going on. With the number of rounds that were exchanged it’s nothing short of a miracle that none of them were hit,” Dix said.

This investigation is ongoing and additional charges and arrests may follow.

Anyone who has any information related to the incident is asked to call Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Eraste Trahan at 770.467.8282 extension 31580.
