STAFF REPORT :::

John “Johnny” Jett, former assistant chief of the Griffin Police Department, passed away Feb. 3, 2020.

Jett began his career in law enforcement on June 1, 1972, and rose through the ranks, serving in every capacity in the GPD for almost 37 years before retiring June 30, 2009.

The GPD described Jett as “a true mentor in every sense of the word, training and supervising with leadership that is reminiscent of a bygone era of law enforcement.”

Two of Jett’s sons, John Daniel Jett and Cary Jackson, followed in his footsteps and continue to serve with the GPD at the ranks of lieutenant and sergeant, respectively.

“Assistant Chief Jett was well known in the community on and off duty and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him,” said a GPD press release.

Conner-Westbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 Saturday and the funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Conner-Westbury Chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
