The Griffin Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault that was reported as a drive by shooting late Monday night.
Officers of the GPD Uniform Patrol Division responded at approximately 11 p.m. to 411 Chappell St. to a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. It was later determined the victim, a 17-year-old male, had instead sustained a gunshot wound to the foot.
According to Officer Kevin Wilson, upon arriving at the E. Chappell St. residence, he spoke with Latissha Trice who reported her son had been shot.
Wilson reported that while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical personnel, Trice grew impatient and chose to transport her son by personal vehicle to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital.
The residents of 411 E. Chappell St. denied knowledge of the shooting, Wilson said.
Wilson said he met Trice at the hospital where he was told the wounded juvenile and some friends were walking from Wing It, a restaurant located at N. Hill and East Quilly streets, when a vehicle allegedly drove by and opened fire.
“(The victim) stated they were walking to 411 East Chappell Street when a gray in color vehicle travelling north on north 6th Street approached them and opened fire,” Wilson said. “(The victim) stated someone from the vehicle yelled ahhh before opening up fire. (The victim) advised he started running and that is when he was struck in his right foot what (sic) doctors believe to be a 9mm bullet.”
Authorities say the 17-year-old ran from the scene of the shooting to the East Chappell St. residence, and that he denied knowing who shot him.
“(The victim) stated it was dark and they were ambush, so he could not get a description of the vehicle or the persons’ involved. (The victim) wouldn’t corporate any further with the investigation (sic all),” Wilson stated.
Wilson reported Trice said she did not know where her son was at 11 p.m. and that she had last seen him at some time during the day.
“Ms. Trice stated she has no clue on who could possibly want to hurt (her son). Ms. Trice was very on uncooperative during the investigation, often telling her son to stop talking and go to sleep (sic all),” Wilson said.
