STAFF REPORT :::

Two men have been arrested after a child accessed a firearm and shot himself Wednesday.

Officers of the Griffin Police Department on Wednesday at approximately 5:55 p.m. responded to a call to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital in reference to a shooting victim.

Upon arrival, officers learned a child had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and foot.

It was determined the incident occurred at North Hill Street and Kentucky Avenue while the child was allegedly left unattended in a parked vehicle where the gun was unsecured.

Officials say the child’s caregivers were outside the vehicle when the child accessed and fired the weapon, striking himself.

Dequaveon L. Lewis, age 21, of Stockbridge, and the child’s father, Kevon Roydrell Roberts, age 22, of Griffin, were arrested and charged with reckless conduct and cruelty to children.  Authorities say the charge of cruelty to children is based on “their actions or inactions related to the incident.”

The child was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and is expected to recover.
