STAFF REPORT :::
A Griffin man was struck by multiple vehicles and killed Sunday night in an incident on Interstate 75 in Monroe County.
Authorities say 25-year-old Markel Dezman Matthews died after a wreck and alleged altercation with an off-duty officer of the Glynn County Police Department.
“(The) preliminary investigation shows that Matthews struck the Officers marked patrol vehicle in the rear, leaving both vehicles inoperable. Matthews exited his vehicle and attacked the Glynn County Officer,” Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Coordinator Anna Lewis said in an emailed statement. “The Officer proceeded to defend himself against Matthews. After a brief struggle, Matthews then ran into Interstate traffic where he was struck by multiple vehicles, killing him instantly.”
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in the northbound lanes of I-75 near Johnstonville Road at approximately 9:40 p.m.
The Glynn County officer, whose name was not released, was transported to Monroe County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
