SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::
A 12-year-old Griffin boy has been arrested and charged in an extensive string of entering auto cases.
The juvenile, who is not being identified due to his age, was arrested July 26, by the Griffin Police Department.
At this time, the suspect has been charged with 84 counts of entering auto and five counts of criminal trespass.
“It has been going on for some time, some time that we’ve been investigating it,” said GPD Public Information Officer Richard Powell
Officials said several businesses on the North Expressway corridor had reported thefts over the past month. Some were able to assist by providing camera footage leading to the suspect’s identification.
Investigators say additional charges against the juvenile suspect are expected.
“We’re looking at more (charges) in reference to this suspect,” Powell said. “A lot of times, people might not necessarily know they’ve been hit, if they leave their doors unlocked and it’s an item that you’re not thinking about on a daily basis.”
When asked if investigators suspect these entering auto cases are gang-related, Powell said, “(There’s) no inclination of that at this time.”
Powell said the District Attorney’s Office has been apprised of the suspect’s age, and confirmed juvenile petitions have been taken, meaning the case will be adjudicated in Juvenile Court.
This investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the GPD Criminal Investigation Division at 770.229.6452.
